HRADC welcomes Electoral Act modification The Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (HRADC) has welcomed the modification to the procedures set out in section 57 of the Electoral Act pertaining to voting by persons with disabilities.

Commission Director, Ashwin Raj said these amendments have created the conditions of possibility for persons with disabilities to select a person of their choice who is a registered voter to assist them to mark their ballot paper inside the polling station on Election Day and can do the same for Pre-Poll.

“These amendments are in consonance with the principles of non-discrimination prescribed under section 26 of the Fijian Constitution as well as section 42(2) on practices or procedures to enable the full participation in society and the effective realisation of the rights of persons with disabilities , section 47 (c) of the Rights of Persons Living with Disabilities Act and Article 29 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) on participation in political and public life which Fiji has now ratified.”

“The Commission commends the Electoral Commission and the Fijian Elections Office in ensuring compliance with our human rights obligations.”

“The Commission strongly encourages all persons with disabilities who are eligible to vote to fully participate and materialise their right to political participation,” he added.
